Airborne?

Post by Ice Man » Mon Dec 23, 2019 8:50 pm

Airborne? I have a few queries to hear what you think about it. I have heard the British are considering to combine the Para's and the RM to a new elite fighting force. What do you think about it? It might be better to combine the SAS and the SBS when the majority of countries in NATO have only one SF unit.

Btw, I have nominated you for the VC and to be knighted

This is one of the options being discussed but it’s the second proposal I’ve heard this year. Earlier this year (and every few years) there’s talk of merging the RM with us to create an elite commando unit. If/when that happens, unfortunately there are going to a vast cut in troop numbers. Would it work? Yes but it would need a lot of cross training to ensure each unit has each other’s specialisms.

With regards to UKSF, it is a already a directorate of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). UKSF is commanded by a Director of Special Forces (DSF) who is a Major General.

UKSF has been around since 1987 in order to bring all UK Special Forces under a single command structure. In 2011, UKSF is a component of the newly established Joint Forces Command (JFC).

The establishment of UKSF was intended amongst other things, to improve co-operation between the SAS and the SBS. One of the results of the formation of UKSF is that the SAS and SBS now have a joint selection process for recruits. The SAS and SBS are also doing more joint operations in recent years so a merger between the two units is inevitable in my opinion.

Here’s an interesting fact. The last 4 out of 5 Director of Special Forces (DSF) have all served in the Parachute Regiment. I don’t recall any that have a Royal Marines background!

I don't like the concept of merging two unique elite forces. It's hard to admit it, but your RM is pretty good with what they are doing when they aren't embarrassing themselves in the public.

I have read and watch books and documentaries about your military awards, especially the VC

Sorry Ice Man, forgot to reply to this.

The nomination is much appreciated but there’s many more people that put up with Thrush’s shit more than I have to (namely his missus and work colleagues - they are the real heroes !)

Merging both would meaning the loss of their uniqueness which would be a shame.

The RM are first class at what they do, probably the finest unit in the world for amphibious assaults etc. But yes, it’s a shame that their behaviour lets them down a and certain former Captain !

Thanks for the links. I’ll have a watch of them during my festive break.

Lord Ashcroft has a huge collection of the VC, I have read his books about the men awarded the VC.

And yes, I thought the RM officers were gentlemen, but I was wrong
